The Christmas Tag
I really LOVE Christmas so I was thrilled to be tagged in the Christmas Tag challenge by the lovely Kimberly from Media Mummy, who by the way, has seen the actual Home Alone house. I’m totally not jealous at all…
What’s your favourite Christmas Movie?
I love a good Christmas film. I’m always watching them and must have at least ten recorded at the minute. I drive Chris crazy with it. My all-time favourite though has to be Santa Clause the Movie. I’ve watched it every year for as long as I can remember. I first watched it at my Auntie and Uncle’s house when I was really young so watching it now makes me all nostalgic.
Have you ever had a white Christmas?
Yes, quite a few. Not many recently but as I child I did. The area I grew up was on quite high ground so when it snowed, it really snowed. Everywhere else would get a light covering of snow but we would have several inches. It was fab. Talk about blizzards though. Kind of like the opening scenes of Santa Clause the Movie… At least in my head it was!
Where do you usually spend your holiday?
Christmas day was always spent at my mum’s house but over the last few years everyone has come to my house. My sister is hosting this year though so I’m looking forward to the big day a little bit more I think. The pressure is off and I don’t have to do a big massive house clean before everyone arrives. I basically have to turn up at my sisters, eat and drink! I suppose I could help with the washing up or something if I really have to… Every Boxing Day we go to my cousin’s house. We have a few drinks and a buffet but the highlight is definitely when we get the board games out. It is supposed to be for the kids but the competitiveness in the adults really takes over…
What is your favourite Christmas song?
That’s easy, The Pogues and Kirsty McColl’s ‘Fairytale of New York’. I love it. It is such a good song, and I have way too much fun singing certain lines to Chris…
Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?
No way!!! Now that I’m a big boring adult I don’t get that many presents anymore so I want to save them all for the big day. We make a Christmas Eve Box for Molly though.
Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
No, sadly. I was just talking about this the other day with my sister. I know Rudolph, Dasher, Prancer, Comet and Blitzen… That’s about it.
What holiday traditions are you looking forward to this year?
I’m really hoping Christmas day at my sister’s house becomes a new tradition! For Molly’s first Christmas we made her a Christmas Eve box and we all had new pyjamas. We have done that for a couple of years now and I think it is something we will continue to do.
Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
Fake. I’ve never had a real one. I do think about getting a real one every year but never do. Maybe one day I will; when Molly is a little bit older.
What is your all time favourite holiday treat/food/sweet?
EGGNOG! Absolutely love it. And one of them big tubes of Smarties; preferably the all pink ones. As long as somebody gets me a tube of Smarties for Christmas I am happy. No need for new perfume and jewellery. Just give me some Smarties.
Be honest, do you like giving or receiving gifts better?
Giving. Honestly. It is nice receiving presents but as long as everyone else is happy then I am. I know that sounds really sad and annoying but it’s true. I’m actually really weird when it comes to receiving presents (and compliments!) I don’t have a very good poker face and I’m not a very good actress so if somebody gave me something I didn’t like, the disappointment would be written all over my face. Then I’d feel really bad. I sound selfish there don’t I.. I don’t mean to be, I’m just a bit weird I suppose.
What is the best Christmas present you ever received?
Ooooh, probably getting a SEGA MEGA DRIVE when I was about ten. I still love Sonic the Hedgehog to this day.
What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
Christmas should be spent with family so I wouldn’t go anywhere unless I could take them all with me. If I could take them all it would be lovely to go somewhere snowy like Switzerland and stay in a nice log cabin.
Are you a pro present wrapper or do you fail miserably?
I like to think of myself as a pro with my fancy paper and ribbons, but in reality I’m the complete opposite. And everyone always complains about how much tape I’ve used which annoys me.
Most memorable Christmas moment?
Oh my god, how could I choose one? Stacks of presents under the tree, playing games with the family, getting to eat loads without being judged, being given lots of money to go to the sales with.. When I was really young I used to lie under my aunties Christmas tree and be mesmerised by all the lights.
The memory I probably look back most fondly on though would be when I was about ten-ish, I went to the top of the stairs when I should have been in bed and I saw my uncle trying to sneak in with a new bike which he had be storing for my mum in his garage. I will never forget the look on his face. He didn’t know what to do at all. Luckily, but unbeknown to him, I already knew I was getting a bike that year because I had picked it out myself. Still makes me laugh thinking about it.
What made you realise the truth about Santa?
I honestly don’t know, but I remember my mum writing ‘Love Santa’ on my gift tags for a few years after I knew the truth. I guess she was trying to keep the magic alive for a little bit longer. Bless her little cotton socks.
What makes the holidays special for you?
Mostly spending time with family, especially because Chris is off work for a couple of weeks. Though everything about the holidays makes them special. Everyone always seems so much happier. I especially love the build-up and anticipation for the big day. We were walking past a Santas Grotto the other day and my niece got a glimpse of Santa because there was a gap in the curtain; the look on her face was a picture; pure joy and magic. It was beautiful to see. That magic is what Christmas is all about, so I guess that is what makes it special.
Awww I loved writing this. It brought back a few good memories.
I would like to nominate these lovely people to take part:
